The accounting emphasis is designed to prepare individuals for careers in teaching, research and consulting. Students will study in the two broad areas of external financial reporting and internal management decision making. The program is focused on the use of social science research methods to address empirical research problems in accounting. UTSA seeks to admit students with high intellectual capability, high motivation and the interest to pursue independent research projects. Students will have the oppor- tunity to work closely with faculty members in small classes, seminars, research projects and other assignments aimed toward developing strong analytical skills, breadth of knowledge in accounting issues and strong competencies to conduct independent, quality research. Program of Study. The program of study has sufficient flexibility to allow each student the opportunity to develop a program that complements individual interests. A background in business, accounting or statistics is helpful, but not required for admission to the program. However, a student entering the program with inadequate skills in mathematics will be obliged to overcome the deficiency through additional coursework. A student without any business background may be required to take as many as five graduate level business courses in addition to the Ph. D. level courses. Admission Requirements Master in Professional Accounting. Applications to the Master in Professional Accounting (MPA) program are accepted for the fall semester only. During the first two to three years, students enroll in coursework designed to provide the basic theoretical and empirical skills necessary to undertake research in accounting. Students take a minimum of four Ph. D. level seminar courses in accounting, wherein they study a wide array of accounting research. Individuals admitted to the program are typically offered fellowships for up to four years. Ph. D. students work with faculty as research assistants and gain valuable hands- on research experience. The UTSA College of Business is a participating university in the Accounting Doctoral Scholars program, which provides fellowships to accounting doctoral students focused on auditing and tax.
