The learners want to take part and in order to do so must understand what others are saying or have written, and they must speak or write in order to express their own point of view or give information.''The need for meaningfulness in language learning has been accepted for some years. A useful interpretation of 'meaningfulness' is that the learners respond to the content in a definite way. If they are amused, angered, intrigued or surprised the content is clearly meaningful to them. Thus the meaning of the language they listen to, read, speak and write will be more vividly experienced and, therefore, better remembered. Constant effort is required to understand, produce and manipulate the target language. Well- chosen games are invaluable as they give students a break and at the same time allow students to practise language skills. Games are highly motivating since they are amusing and at the same time challenging. Furthermore, they employ meaningful and useful language in real contexts. They also encourage and increase cooperation.''Games are highly motivating because they are amusing and interesting. They can be used to give practice in all language skills and be used to practice many types of communication.' This is a misconception. It is possible to learn a language as well as enjoy oneself at the same time. One of the best ways of doing this is through games.' 'There are many advantages of using games in the classroom: 1. Games are a welcome break from the usual routine of the language class. They are motivating and challenging. Learning a language requires a great deal of effort. Games help students to make and sustain the effort of learning. Games provide language practice in the various skills- speaking, writing, listening and reading. They encourage students to interact and communicate. Many experienced textbook and methodology manuals writers have argued that games are not just time- filling activities but have a great educational value. W. R. Lee holds that most language games make learners use the language instead of thinking about learning the correct forms (1. He also says that games should be treated as central not peripheral to the foreign language teaching programme. A similar opinion is expressed by Richard- Amato, who believes games to be fun but warns against overlooking their pedagogical value, particularly in foreign language teaching. There are many advantages of using games. Games can lower anxiety, thus making the acquisition of input more likely" (Richard- Amato 1. They are highly motivating and entertaining, and they can give shy students more opportunity to express their opinions and feelings (Hansen 1. They also enable learners to acquire new experiences within a foreign language which are not always possible during a typical lesson. Furthermore, to quote Richard- Amato, they, "add diversion to the regular classroom activities," break the ice, "[but also] they are used to introduce new ideas" (1. In the easy, relaxed atmosphere which is created by using games, students remember things faster and better (Wierus and Wierus 1. S. M. Silvers says many teachers are enthusiastic about using games as "a teaching device," yet they often perceive games as mere time- fillers, "a break from the monotony of drilling" or frivolous activities. He also claims that many teachers often overlook the fact that in a relaxed atmosphere, real learning takes place, and students use the language they have been exposed to and have practised earlier (1. Further support comes from Zdybiewska, who believes games to be a good way of practising language, for they provide a model of what learners will use the language for in real life in the future (1. Games encourage, entertain, teach, and promote fluency. If not for any of these reasons, they should be used just because they help students see beauty in a foreign language and not just problems that at times seem overwhelming.'When to Use Games'Games are often used as short warm- up activities or when there is some time left at the end of a lesson. Yet, as Lee observes, a game "should not be regarded as a marginal activity filling in odd moments when the teacher and class have nothing better to do" (1. Games ought to be at the heart of teaching foreign languages. Rixon suggests that games be used at all stages of the lesson, provided that they are suitable and carefully chosen.''Games also lend themselves well to revision exercises helping learners recall material in a pleasant, entertaining way. All authors referred to in this article agree that even if games resulted only in noise and entertained students, they are still worth paying attention to and implementing in the classroom since they motivate learners, promote communicative competence, and generate fluency.'From 'Learning Vocabulary Through Games'by Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen and Khuat Thi Thu Nga'Asian EFL Journal' - December 2. Games have been shown to have advantages and effectiveness in learning vocabulary in various ways. First, games bring in relaxation and fun for students, thus help them learn and retain new words more easily. Second, games usually involve friendly competition and they keep learners interested. These create the motivation for learners of English to get involved and participate actively in the learning activities. Third, vocabulary games bring real world context into the classroom, and enhance students' use of English in a flexible, communicative way.''Therefore, the role of games in teaching and learning vocabulary cannot be denied. However, in order to achieve the most from vocabulary games, it is essential that suitable games are chosen. Whenever a game is to be conducted, the number of students, proficiency level, cultural context, timing, learning topic, and the classroom settings are factors that should be taken into account.''In conclusion, learning vocabulary through games is one effective and interesting way that can be applied in any classrooms. The results of this research suggest that games are used not only for mere fun, but more importantly, for the useful practice and review of language lessons, thus leading toward the goal of improving learners' communicative competence.' Communicative language teaching (CLT), or the communicative approach, is an approach to language teaching that emphasizes interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of study. Background[edit]Societal influences[edit]Communicative language teaching rose to prominence in the 1. Europe and the United States. First, there was an increased demand for language learning, particularly in Europe. The advent of the European Common Market led to. European migration, and consequently there was a large population of people who needed to learn a foreign language for work or for personal reasons. At the same time, children were increasingly able to learn foreign languages in school. The number of secondary schools offering languages rose worldwide in the 1. In Britain, the introduction of comprehensive schools meant that almost all children had the opportunity to study foreign languages. This increased demand put pressure on educators to change their teaching methods. Traditional methods such as grammar translation assumed that students were aiming for mastery of the target language, and that students were willing to study for years before expecting to use the language in real life. However, these assumptions were challenged by adult learners who were busy with work, and by schoolchildren who were less academically able. Educators realized that to motivate these students an approach with a more immediate payoff was necessary. The trend of progressivism in education provided further pressure for educators to change their methods. Progressivism holds that active learning is more effective than passive learning, and as this idea gained traction in schools there was a general shift towards using techniques where students were more actively involved, such as group work. Foreign- language education was no exception to this trend, and teachers sought to find new methods that could better embody this shift in thinking. In the beginning time of language teaching, it was thought that language teaching is a cognitive matter. The idea then shifted from cognitive to socio- cognitive, which emphasizes that language can be learnt throughout the social process. However, in today's process of language teaching, incorporation of ICT has become mandatory in teaching any language. Academic influences[edit]The development of communicative language teaching was also helped by new academic ideas. In Britain, applied linguists began to doubt the efficacy of situational language teaching, the dominant method in that country at the time. This was partly in response to Chomsky’s insights into the nature of language. Chomsky had shown that the structural theories of language prevalent at the time could not explain the creativity and variety evident in real communication. In addition, British applied linguists such as Christopher Candlin and Henry Widdowson began to see that a focus on structure was also not helping language students. They saw a need for students to develop communicative skill and functional competence in addition to mastering language structures. In the United States, the linguist and anthropologist Dell Hymes developed the concept of communicative competence. This was a reaction to Chomsky’s concept of the linguistic competence of an ideal native speaker. Communicative competence redefined what it meant to “know” a language; in addition to speakers having mastery over the structural elements of language, according to communicative competence they must also be able to use those structural elements appropriately in different social situations. This is neatly summed up by Hymes’s statement, “There are rules of use without which the rules of grammar would be useless. Hymes did not make a concrete formulation of communicative competence, but subsequent authors have tied the concept to language teaching, notably Michael Canale. Communicative syllabi[edit]An influential development in the history of communicative language teaching was the work of the Council of Europe in creating new language syllabi. Education was a high priority for the Council of Europe, and they set out to provide syllabi that would meet the needs of European immigrants. Among the studies used by the council when designing the course was one by the British linguist, D. A. Wilkins, that defined language using “notions” and “functions”, rather than more traditional categories of grammar and vocabulary. Notional categories include concepts such as time, location, frequency, and quantity, and functional categories include communicative acts such as offers, complaints, denials, and requests. These syllabi were widely used. Communicative language- learning materials were also developed in Germany. There was a new emphasis on personal freedom in German education at the time, an attitude exemplified in the philosophy of JГјrgen Habermas. To meet this goal, educators developed materials that allowed learners to choose freely what they wanted to communicate. These materials concentrated on the various different social meanings a given item of grammar could have, and were structured in such a way that learners could choose how to progress through the course themselves. The materials were used in teacher training courses and workshops to encourage teachers to change to using a communicative syllabus. Two similar projects were also undertaken by Candlin at Lancaster University, and by Holec at the University of Nancy. Meanwhile, at the University of Illinois, there was a study that investigated the effects of the explicit teaching of learning strategies to language learners. The study encouraged learners to take risks while communicating, and to use constructs other than rote memorized patterns. At the study’s conclusion, students who were taught communicatively fared no worse on grammar tests than students who had been taught with traditional methods; and they performed significantly better in tests of communicative ability. This was the case even for beginners. As a result of this study, supplemental communicative activities were created for the French CRГ‰DIF course Voix et Visages de la France. These materials focused on classroom autonomy; and learners were taught various phrases they could use to negotiate meaning, such as “What’s the word for …? I don’t understand”. Outline[edit]CLT is usually characterized as a broad approach to teaching, rather than as a teaching method with a clearly defined set of classroom practices. As such, it is most often defined as a list of general principles or features. One of the most recognized of these lists is David Nunan’s (1. CLT: An emphasis on learning to communicate through interaction in the target language. The introduction of authentic texts into the learning situation. The provision of opportunities for learners to focus, not only on language but also on the learning process itself. An enhancement of the learner’s own personal experiences as important contributing elements to classroom learning. An attempt to link classroom language learning with language activities outside the classroom. These five features are claimed by practitioners of CLT to show that they are very interested in the needs and desires of their learners as well as the connection between the language as it is taught in their class and as it used outside the classroom. Under this broad umbrella definition, any teaching practice that helps students develop their communicative competence in an authentic context is deemed an acceptable and beneficial form of instruction. Thus, in the classroom CLT often takes the form of pair and group work requiring negotiation and cooperation between learners, fluency- based activities that encourage learners to develop their confidence, role- plays in which students practise and develop language functions, as well as judicious use of grammar- and pronunciation- focused activities. In the mid 1. 99. Dogma 9. 5 manifesto influenced language teaching through the Dogme language teaching movement, who proposed that published materials can stifle the communicative approach. As such, the aim of the Dogme approach to language teaching is to focus on real conversations about real subjects so that communication is the engine of learning. This communication may lead to explanation, and that in turn will lead to further communication.[6]Classroom activities[edit]Classroom activities used in communicative language teaching include the following: Role- play. Interviewsinformation gap. Games. Language exchanges. Surveys. Pair- work. Learning by teaching. However, not all courses that utilize the Communicative Language approach will restrict their activities solely to these. Some courses will have the students take occasional grammar quizzes, or prepare at home using non- communicative drills, for instance. William Glasser's "control theory" exemplifies his attempts to empower students and give them voice by focusing on their basic, human needs: Unless students are given power, they may exert what little power they have to thwart learning and achievement through inappropriate behavior and mediocrity. Thus, it is important for teachers to give students voice, especially in the current educational climate, which is dominated by standardization and testing (Simmons and Page, 2. Critiques of CLT[edit]One of the most famous attacks on communicative language teaching was offered by Michael Swan in the English Language Teaching Journal in 1. Henry Widdowson responded in defense of CLT, also in the ELT Journal (1. More recently other writers (e. Bax[9]) have critiqued CLT for paying insufficient attention to the context in which teaching and learning take place, though CLT has also been defended against this charge (e. Harmer 2. 00. 3[1. Often, the communicative approach is deemed a success if the teacher understands the student. ![]() ![]() Thats So Raven DVD Sample VTS_0. That's So Raven Disney Channel. Girl Meets World. However, author William J. Krouse went on to note that “data are not available on the number of ‘assault weapons’ in private possession or available for sale, but one study estimated that 1. Good data are hard to come by because firearms manufacturers generally don’t break down their production statistics by model. But that 1. 99. 4 statistic that Krouse cited isn’t very satisfying, so let’s see if we can go deeper. Take the AR- 1. 5, the auto- loading rifle that Adam Lanza used at Sandy Hook. The AR- 1. 5 is the civilian equivalent of the military M- 1. It’s one of the most popular assault- style rifles on the market today. In 2. 00. 9, in a declaration made as part of the court case Heller v. District of Columbia, which challenged D. C.’s assault weapons ban,NRA research coordinator Mark Overstreet reported that, from 1. AR- 1. 5- style semi- automatic rifles were produced and not exported from the United States. Overstreet suggested that you could use trends in NICS background checks to project future sales of AR- 1. As of Nov. 3. 0, 2. NICS background checks increased by 5. If the number of AR- 1. AR- 1. 5 rifles currently available in the United States. That “at least” is an important caveat. These data only include firearms manufactured in the United States. In his declaration, Overstreet notes that, since 1. U. S.- made firearms have accounted for roughly three- fourths of all new firearms available on the commercial market in the United States.” So if you increase the above number to account for foreign- made, AR- 1. More caveats: Overstreet derived his numbers by examining the sales figures of companies that only produced AR- 1. He didn’t include sales data from America’s three largest gunmakers—Remington, Smith & Wesson, and Sturm- Ruger—because these three produce multiple lines of rifles, and he couldn’t break down the data. Remington is now a wholly owned subsidiary of the Freedom Group.)That’s weak stuff, Overstreet! Let’s try estimating those figures ourselves. According to Sturm- Ruger’s 2. Sturm- Ruger produced 1,1. Assuming that every gun cost the same amount—this is certainly incorrect, but we’re just making a back- of- the- envelope calculation here—2. According to Overstreet, AR- 1. If that statistic remains true, then Sturm- Ruger produced close to 4. AR- 1. 5- style rifles in 2. Walk that number back through the years, and extrapolate it out to the other two manufacturers, and you’re possibly looking at anywhere from 5. AR- 1. 5- style rifles. Again, I must caution that there is a potentially huge margin of error in these calculations.)Add everything together, make all the necessary caveats, carry the two, and we reach the conclusion that there are somewhere around 3,7. AR- 1. 5- type rifles in the United States today. If there are around 3. USA today, that means these auto- loading assault- style rifles make up around 1 percent of the total arsenal. And keep in mind, the AR- 1. Overstreet estimated that more than 8. Ruger Mini- 1. 4 rifles—the rifle that Anders Behring Breivik used in the Oslo summer camp shootings last year—had been produced since 1. There are other types, too. This is only the tip of the gunberg. No matter the exact figures, there are a whole hell of a lot of assault weapons in America, which complicates any talk of gun control. The most effective way for the government to reduce the existing gun stock would be to buy them back from their owners. When Australia imposed strict gun control measures in 1. Aussie government bought back 6. The gun buyback program, which cost an estimated $4. U. S. dollars, was funded by a temporary 1 percent income tax levy. Would such a plan fly in America? Extrapolating from Australia's numbers, a similar buyback in this more gun- laden country would cost billions. While a tax increase isn't the only way to raise that much money—the federal government could have a bake sale, or auction off some of its lesser- known historical treasures—it's certainly the most obvious way to do it. We might soon see what voters and politicians hate more: guns or taxes. Read more on Slate about gun control.*Correction, December 2. This post originally and incorrectly referred to the AR- 1. Judging GPU performance has a lot to do with how quickly the pixels are refreshed, and fewer pixels makes it easier on the processor. The One X, for example, has 7. One S, which puts its GPU at a disadvantage. ![]() Tegra 3 and Snapdragon S4: A Brief Comparison. Before we get started, let’s compare the processors. The NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor offers four cores and a fifth “battery saver” companion core that can be used for side tasks that do not require quad- core power. NVIDIA explained that the four ARM Cortex A9 cores in Tegra 3 are also capable of scaling down their clock speed automatically in order to meet the demands of applications. If, for example, you’re playing a resource- intensive game, Tegra 3 will power all four cores to 1. GHz and give you all you need. But if you’re just browsing the web, the cores may scale down to 7. MHz each for more efficient battery life. Why?“By operating each core at a lower frequency, each of these cores can also be run at a lower voltage level,” NVIDIA marketing manager Sridhar Ramaswamy explained. Semiconductor physics dictate that the power consumption of a core is proportional to the frequency and the square of the operating voltage. Due to this square law relationship, even a small reduction in voltage would result in a larger reduction in power consumption. Therefore the total power consumption of a quad core CPUВ to process the same workload would be lower than that of a dual core CPU.”Qualcomm’s S4 processor, on the other hand, is powered by two more powerful Cortex A1. Krait” cores. Those cores, much like NVIDIA’s, are capable of scaling the processor clock speed up or down to meet the needs of the applications that take advantage of them. Qualcomm calls this tech “power smart.” The Krait processor is more energy efficient in general. В than the A9, which means it should offer more power without consuming as much energy. Dual- Core vs. Quad- Core, A Video by Texas Instruments. Texas Instruments has already published a video that shows two ARM Cortex A1. Cortex A9 chips in a benchmark test, but we don’t know is if the devices were otherwise identical, or how they actually performed in real life. We’ll go through a series of benchmarks so you can see the numbers for yourselves, but then we’ll also. В walk you through real- world tests of the One X and One S. Overall, we’re expecting the phones to perform similarly to one another — although NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 is expected to blow the S4 away in gaming tests, mainly because NVIDIA has developed games to specifically take advantage of their quad- core CPU. In any case,В let’s dive in first with that video from TI. An. Tu. Tu v. 2. 7. Benchmark, Smart. Bench 2. 01. 2 and And. EMark. First, a brief explanation of what each of these benchmarks does. An. Tu. Tu v. 2. 7. We chose this test because it allows us to see how two cores compete against four cores. In addition, it shows how 2. D/3. D and I/O capabilities of each processor perform. However, the 2. D/3. D tests are resolution dependent so the Snapdragon S4 has an upper hand because it has fewer pixels to render on the One S’s display. Smart. Bench 2. 01. D renders. It’s a standard test that’s frequently used to benchmark phones. Ande. EMark is especially important because it was built by the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium. AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, Qualcomm and many others are part of the consortium, so this is a test that’s been standardized and approved by a group of chipmakers and industry insiders. Ande. EMark is capable of testing multicore and multithreading capabilities of a given processor and can also test the Java efficiency of the CPU. Winner: Tegra 3. Higher scores are better in the chart above and we can see that NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 was the clear winner in Ande. Mark Native, Smart. Bench 2. 01. 2 and An. Tu. Tu v. 2. 7. 3. It posted higher scores for every test, although the benchmarks for Smart. Bench 2. 01. 2 were relatively close. Winner: Tegra 3. In this test, Tegra 3 came on top. It’s visible here that the Snapdragon S4 Krait processors were showing their ability to compete nearly head- to- head with four Cortex A9 processors. Quadrant: Quadrant is a popular test that’s used all over various Android forums to compare devices. It’s an accurate test for performing multi- threaded CPU tests, but it doesn’t accurately portray 2. D or 3. D graphics performances because there isn’t an option to change the screen resolution. Winner: В Snapdragon S4, but if anything is clear here both processors absolutely slaughtered the dual- core chips in the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Nexus. В In this test the Tegra 3 was rendering 3. D graphics for a much higher resolution display than what the S4 had to power. В You’ll see here that the S4 generally outperformed Tegra 3 but that its CPU results fell behind В T3′s. The S4 won Quadrant’s Memory, 2. D and I/O tests but it lagged in the 3. D tests, even though the One S has a lower resolution display. GLBenchmark 2. 1. Egypt Offscreen: В GLBenchmark 2. Egypt” benchmark that tests Open GL ES 2. It also supports “offscreen mode” for rendering to a specific, display- independent resolution. This allows us to test the S4 versus the Tegra 3 without taking the physical. В screen resolutions of the HTC One S and the HTC One X into consideration. Winner: Tegra 3. В Tegra 3 won simply because it was able to display a greater number of frames per second (higher scores are better). However, the S4’s 5. It would be pretty much impossible to distinguish a game playing at 6. Moonbat for Chrome. Moonbat allows users to test the multithreaded CPU performance inside of the Chrome web browser using a series of Java- based tests. In this case, the lower score is better because it means the benchmark finished faster. Winner: Snapdragon S4. В I set the “Webworkers” figure to four for Tegra 3, so that all four cores were running, and set the same figure to two for the S4 to activate both of its cores. The Snapdragon S4 won, completing the tests roughly 3. Tegra 3. UPDATE: We’ve added a second chart and in this case set both processors to run four threads in Moonbat (representing four tabs in Chrome, for example). That means that Tegra 3 will offload one thread to each core while the S4 chip will run two threads on each of its cores. Tegra 3 wins in this test because it’s able to better execute the task across more cores. However, the S4 only has two cores and so we originally ran the first test to reflect that. Gaming: Shadowgun THD Tegra 3 vs Shadowgun (Standard Edition): NVIDIA has created a tweaked version of Shadowgun for Tegra 3 devices. There’s more detail in the 3. D world, which means the game looks better overall. That’s one upside to owning a Tegra 3 device: the company works with developers to create Tegra- specific versions of games (sold through the Tegra Zone application) with much more detail, including water effects, smoke, fire and physics. There’s more glowing effects around lights, for example, and the armor is noticeably much more elaborate on Tegra 3 than on Snapdragon S4. В There are quite a few Tegra- optimized games out now and many more are expected to launch later this year. Shadowgun THD on Tegra 3: Shadowgun (Standard Edition) on Snapdragon S4: В Shadowgun (Standard Edition)It’s not fair to compare the S4 against the Tegra 3 in a game that was specifically designed for the Tegra 3. So in this test, I simply compared the real- world gaming experience of. В Shadowgun. В on both the HTC One S and the One X to see if there were any noticeable differences. Overall the game acted and looked nearly the same on both phones, although the graphics were admittedly a bit more crisp on the One X simply because it has a higher resolution display. What does this tell us? That the S4 can hold its own to the One X when it comes to games that are designed to run across multiple processors. As you’ll note in the screenshots below, there are relatively few differences between the two games. Shadowgun (Standard Edition) on Tegra 3: Shadowgun (Standard Edition) on Snapdragon S4: Conclusion. Tegra 3 Pros: Tegra 3 offers four processing cores (plus a fifth battery saver core), which allows applications to unload onto a larger number of processors. That means you’re splitting the power across four cores instead of just two, which theoretically will help save battery life. NVIDIA is working closely with developers to create special Tegra Zone games. That means you not only have access to the original games in the Google Play store but also the enhanced versions from NVIDIA. Incredible multitasking performance in real world tests. Support for real- time physics and dynamic lighting in games. Tegra 3 Cons: NVIDIA has not yet announced partnerships with U. S. carriers to offer 4. G LTE devices with Tegra 3 in the U. S., but that is likely to change down the road. That means Qualcomm, with its Snapdragon S4 processor, has the upper hand when it comes to providing 4. G LTE chips. Qualcomm is the largest supplier of 4. G LTE radios in the U. S. В To its credit, NVIDIA already has solutions for 4. G LTE support in Japan and the company has partnerships to provide 4. G LTE solutions elsewhere, too. Currently only available in the One X, LG’s upcoming Optimus 4. X HD and the ASUS Transformer Prime tablet. HTC One X Benchmarks: Tegra 3 vs. Snapdragon S4. Ver. Г¶ffentlicht am 0. We are fortunate enough to have both Tegra 3 and Snapdragon S4 variants of the HTC One X which means only one thing, we need to run some benchmarks to compare them. It received mostly positive reviews from critics; Jean and Reiss won an Annie Award for producing it. Leonard Nimoy begins the episode hosting a show about alien encounters. He talks about an encounter in a town called Springfield. At Moe's on a Friday night, Homer drinks ten beers, and after insisting he takes a breathalyzer test where Homer reaches "Boris Yeltsin" level, Moe declares that he is drunk and will not let him drive. Homer decides to walk home, but takes a wrong path and ends up in the woods. In a clearing, he sees a glowing thin- boned alien. Although the alien says "Don't be afraid", Homer panics and runs home screaming. The rest of the family do not believe Homer's story, believing it to be a drunken hallucination, and his attempts to report the alien sighting to the local police are dismissed. Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully of the FBI hear of the sighting and go to investigate. After receiving no results from their psychological tests of him (which involved Homer making a polygraph explode and jogging on a treadmill (which served no purpose other than Scully wanting Homer to lose some weight), Homer fails to provide any proof that he actually did see an alien, including bringing the agents to the clearing where he saw the alien, which only succeeds in coming across a lost and confused Grampa. Homer is ridiculed by most of the neighborhood; even Marge refuses to believe in his claims and demands he forget about it, but Bart admits that he does believe what Homer is saying. The next Friday night, the pair camp out in the forest. The alien arrives and promises peace, but Homer scares it away when he accidentally steps on their camp fire and screams in pain. Fortunately, Bart captured the entire incident on tape, and Homer thanks him, cheering for the evidence of the alien in their hands. Leonard Nimoy wishes a goodnight to the viewers. He is then reminded that the show still has ten minutes left by an off- screen Squeaky Voiced Teen, at which point he runs to his car and leaves. The Squeaky Voiced Teen takes over the narrating duties. Following the successful capture of the alien's existence, Homer and Bart present it to the media. Although Bart's tape is only three seconds long and is mostly static, everyone in town finally believes Homer, including Marge, who apologizes to Homer for doubting him. Lisa, on the other hand, refuses to believe this and maintains that there should be a more logical explanation. Friday comes again and everyone, including Leonard Nimoy and Agent Scully, goes to the forest. Sure enough, the alien appears again, promising love. The townspeople begin to riot, and charge at the alien. Lisa and Waylon Smithers stop them just in time, showing that the "alien" is actually Mr. Burns. Smithers explains that Burns receives longevity treatment once a week in order to cheat death for a further seven days; this leaves him twisted and disoriented, as well as giving him a soft, high pitched voice as a result of a vocal cord scraping. Back to his normal self, Burns reveals that his green glow is due to many years of working in his nuclear plant, and then renounces his promises of peace and love and instead says that he now intends to bring fear, famine and pestilence, shortly before receiving another booster injection from Dr. Nick. He instantly reverts to his "alien" self; he begins to sing "Good Morning Starshine", with the entire crowd (including Mulder, Scully, and Chewbacca) joining in as the sun rises over the clearing. Squeaky- voiced Teen closes the episode by telling the viewers to watch the skies (he momentarily mispronounced it as skis). Production[edit]The episode was produced by Al Jean and Mike Reiss, who had served as showrunners of seasons three and four. They returned to the show to produce this and several other episodes while under contract at Disney.[3] The episode was written by Reid Harrison and directed by Steven Dean Moore.[1] It had one of the longest episode gaps between its conception to the time it was finished.[4] The idea was first conceived at a story retreat. Jean found a copy of TV Guide while in the bathroom, with The X- Files on the cover. Feeling a crossover would be a good idea, he came back into the room, told Reiss his idea, and the pair pitched it.[4] None of the other staff wanted to do it, so Reiss and Jean decided to do it themselves.[4] Before the episode was produced the script was sent to Chris Carter, the creator of The X- Files, who said that it was an "honor" to be satirized by The Simpsons.[4] Al Jean was worried that the episode was not funny, as at the table reading there were only a few of the writers present and as such, the script got no laughs at all.[4] It took a long time to come up with an ending, and an explanation for the alien. Originally it was just going to be left as a mystery.[5] Mulder and Scully's office was designed to be exactly the same as the one used in The X- Files.[6] After it had been finished, Fox sent the episode out for a critical review, which was "really great".[5] The scene with the "Homer is a dope" T- shirts originally had an extra line: "I told you, we're sold out!", thus filling in the plot error in the actual episode in which Homer asks for some T- shirts, despite just being told that they were sold out.[6] The scene after Homer's first encounter with the alien, in which he runs through a field writing "Yahhh!" in the grass was written by David M. Stern, and added in after the original read through.[4]Cultural references[edit]. The FBI line- up, described by Mike Reiss as the "most illegal shot" in the history of the show as the writers did not get permission to use any of the characters besides Kang/Kodos.[5]The Leonard Nimoy segments are a send- up of the paranormal documentary series In Search Of.., which Nimoy hosted.[7] In addition to the appearances of Mulder and Scully, the episode features several other references to The X- Files. Mulder's FBI badge has a picture of himself only wearing a speedo on it; this is a reference to a scene in The X- Files episode "Duane Barry" in which David Duchovny wore just a speedo.[4] Also, in the scene where Scully gives Homer a lie detector test, the Cigarette Smoking Man is in the background.[2][6] There are also numerous film references. The music played by the Springfield Philharmonic comes from Psycho (1. The narration sequences are based on Plan 9 from Outer Space (1. In one chapter title, the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" being printed out ad infinitum is a reference to The Shining (1. Chewbacca, ALF, and one of the Kang and Kodos siblings make up the FBI line- up.[2] The Budweiser Frogs appear in the swamp, chanting their names, "Bud.. Weis.. Er." They are then eaten by an alligator who growls "Coors!"[4] Homer's suggestion that he and Bart fake an alien encounter and sell it to the Fox network is an allusion to the Alien Autopsy hoax.[7] As Homer recounts his experience to Chief Wiggum, he recalls the alien having a sweet, heavenly voice and appearing every Friday night "like Urkel", from the ABC/CBS sitcom Family Matters. Homer also tells falsely to two FBI agents of an evening in which he with members of the gentlemen's club played a game of backgammon while discussing Wittgenstein. Such reference alludes to the Cambridge Moral Sciences Club, an elite club where Wittgenstein dominated in discussions to the extent of provoking fellow philosopher, Karl Popper, by brandishing a red- hot poker at him (according to Popper). Reception[edit]In its original broadcast, "The Springfield Files" finished 2. January 6–1. 2, 1. Nielsen rating of 1. It was the third- highest- rated show on the Fox network that week, following The X- Files and the series premiere of King of the Hill.[1. Al Jean and Mike Reiss won the Annie Award for Best Individual Achievement: Producing in a TV Production for their work on the episode.[1. The authors of the book I Can't Believe It's a Bigger and Better Updated Unofficial Simpsons Guide, Warren Martyn and Adrian Wood, said that it was "a very clever episode, with the line- up one of the best visual gags in ages."[2]IGN. Leonard Nimoy's performance in this episode, and "Marge vs. Monorail", as the 1. Total Film 's Nathan Ditum ranked Duchovny and Anderson's performances as the fourth- best guest appearances in the show's history.[1. Skeptical Inquirer reviewed the episode positively, stating that "It's rare that a popular, prime- time network television show turns out to be a "slam dunk" for skeptics."[7] Critic Chris Knight speculated that if The X- Files is one day forgotten, those who see this episode will probably still appreciate the scene with ALF, Chewbacca, and Marvin the Martian.[1. Online Toddler Games Colors![]() ![]() Free toddler games are available on the Internet that can be both educational and entertaining. If you have a toddler in the family, you will find several of these games online that your child can try. If your kid is having tantrums or there’s something important that you need to do, online games for toddlers are perfect to keep them well behaved. Younger toddlers like those who are one or two years old usually need assistance to play them. There are games that will tell stories, play songs or dances that these little kids will enjoy. Since they often require hitting specific keys on the keyboard or clicking the play button, you can do this for your child and let him enjoy the rest of the application. For those who are ready to be trained for basic mouse and keyboard use, there are interactive games that will make learning more fun for them. The games have various subjects and instructions. But since they are for toddlers, they are generally designed for kids on this age group. Most of the games use colorful graphics since they are enticing for them. Some of the games introduce them to basic colors. They are often accompanied by background music to make the games more enjoyable for the children. Coloring games are also available for toddlers. They work basically like coloring books though they are played online. Instead of smudging crayons on a coloring book, kids can click on the color that they want to use and apply it on the drawing by clicking on the part to be colored. There are toddler games that will help familiarize themselves with the alphabets. Games that have the alphabet song incorporated make it easier for kids to know them as they often learn things easily through songs. Pictures of things that start with the letters on the alphabet are used on other games as well. Kids will click on the letter and the picture of a thing that starts with it will be shown with its corresponding pronunciation. This will let the toddlers learn about the sound of the letters. Animal, plants and number games are available as well. They can help kids learn about the things that they see around them. These games are very helpful as they will satisfy the toddlers’ curiosity and make learning easier for them. Some animal games will not only tell their names but their sounds too. Clicking on the animal will play how they sound like so kids will know about them. Toddlers are usually into cartoons. At a young age, they tend to like specific cartoon characters like Spongebob and Patrick Starfish. The good news is that there are a lot of cartoon games for toddlers on the Internet that they can enjoy for free. Free Toddler Games. Activities and Crafts – Toddler Activities, Games, Crafts. |
